Whilst you could try and install a consumer unit yourself, in the majority of countries Worldwide, it is highly recommended, if not even the Law, that only a qualified Belmar electrician should install your unit. And this applies to workplaces and homes alike.

The advantage is that if one of the smaller circuits should trip the main RCD switch, then you can simply turn the consumer unit back on again, and all of the power will be working except for the circuit which has tripped out.

The circuit that has tripped out will be identifiable as it will still be in the "Down" position. This means all of the rest of the power for light circuits, ring mains etc will still be working. This will enable you to have light in one form or another to find the fault e.g. if the ring main has tripped out then you will still have lights, and if the light circuit has tripped out you could plug a light into the ring main.

Overall they can actually be a lifesaver, as having an RCD breaker for an outside power circuit can mean the difference between life and death. Who has cut through the mains cable when using a hedge trimmer? Or seen someone else do it? An RCD breaker can instantly sense the short circuit and cuts the power faster than you can be electrocuted.
